Beijing

Beijing has been China's capital since 1421 (except between 1911 and 1949). Due to its long history the city offers a manifold of impressive cultural sights you should visit during your internship in China.

The Great Wall

The Great Wall in China is one of the Eight Wonders of the World and was enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Dictionary in 1987. Additionally, it is the only building in the world that can be viewed from space. The wall stretches through China from West to East and is approx. 6700 kilometers long. Parts of the wall are only in ruins or have totally vanished today due to its more than 2000 years of history. But nevertheless, the Chinese Great Wall is still an architecturally impressive building with an immense historical meaning.

Tian'anmen Square

The square in Beijings center with its Gate of Heavenly Peace is considered the largest square of its kind in the world. It stretches across 880 m from north to south and 500 m from east to west, which is a total of 440000m². Additionally you can find the Monument for the People's Heroes honoring the victims of the revolutionary fights of the 19th and 20th centuries. The square made sad news in 1989. The Tian'amen Massacre through the Chinese Military ended the student occupation of the square.

The Forbidden City

The palace in the city center was seat of the Chinese imperator during the Ming and Qing Dynasties until 1911. The population was not allowed into the complex and thus it was named "forbidden city. It was built in only 14 years and was opened in 1420 by Imperior Yongle. The Forbidden City with its 890 different palaces covering over 150000 m² is among the largest connected built areas worldwide. The palaces could be seen in the popular movie "The Last Emperor".
