Because you can find a lot of sailing boats in Auckland, the city is also called "City of Sails". The city got the biggest yacht harbor in the southern hemisphere and got the most sailing boats, compared to the number of inhabitants. Numerous beaches can be found for swimming or surfing. The most famous ones can be found on the eastcoast, with beautiful white sand. Some of these beaches are for example Mission Bay, Devonport, Takapuna, Long Bay or Maraetai.

The beaches in direction Tasmanian Sea are covered in black volcanic sand. The most famous ones are Piha and Muriwai Beach. Piha is especially famous for its great surf and the after-surf parties.

Kite- and windsurfing is also very famous in Auckland. Shoal Bay in Bayswater at the north shore is one of the best places for that and is also a good spot for beginners to strengthen ther skills.
