Inga: Volunteering in Nepal

I worked for 3 and half weeks in the primary Health Care Resource Center in Chapagoun. I spent the most time in the MEH clinic. I helped with the Family planning, the immunization and the Antenatal Care. I checked blood pressures of the patients and checked the weight. Sometimes I watched their children when patients got an immunization injection or for family planning.
I was also involved in the Nutrition School Program of the project. The school program is about the Mid-day lunch of the students. We checked the lunch of each student from class I up to class 5. We gave them notes if they have homemade food like rice, vegetables, soya beans, fruits, or maize they got 3 marks. For mixed foods like fruits and biscuits they received 2 marks. The junk food like biscuits or noodles like Mayos were just 1 mark. After one month the students with the highest score in each class received prizes. The prizes are useful things; note books, pencils or something else for school.
During my volunteer time I also went to the National English Secondary School the Emerald Sec.school., the Bageshwory Primary School and in the Udaya kharka school to check the Midday lunch of the students. I think, the biggest problem of having a lunch and personal hygiene was in the Bagheshwori Primary school. I tried to explain to the students how important is it to have homemade food or something to eat for lunch but the children are often too young to understand it and I discussed with the teachers if it’s possible to speak to the parents or to write them a letter. He said that they are going to try it but often the parents work very hard and have not enough time to teach their children. I think that when the teachers try to teach the children about personal hygiene and nutrition they are on the right way so that the children have a better future. I heard that before the Nutrition School program most students had nothing to eat in school for lunch time and since the program was established it has started to change. Most of the children bring something from home to eat so they are on the right way with this program. The children also have the motivation of the prizes and they are very excited when they receive one.
It was really interesting to see how life is so different in another culture. I have really enjoyed the last four weeks here in Nepal and I am sure that I will come back. Next time I want to travel a little bit more with friends. But these four weeks I was very happy to see life in a Nepali family and to work with the project. It gave me many impressions. Thanks very much for organizing all this for me. You are very helpful and friendly and I am thankful to have had the change to call you when there was a problem or something to ask.
Thanks a lot,
Inga
